Dynamic Steam Sterilization

Most spices such as chili, pepper, cumin, or others are heavily contaminated with microorganisms. Many sterilization processes affect product characteristics such as taste, smell or color. Since these are important quality features and selling points, effective and gentle sterilization is crucial to establishing a successful product. To help this effort, BHS has developed automatic plants that guarantee 5-log reduction of microbiological contamination. The plants work with dynamic pressure sterilization, giving you a sterilization result free of color or flavor loss. In addition to quality aspects, our method provides a precisely controllable and particularly short sterilization process.

Benefits at a glance:

  • The product’s color, fragrance and taste remain almost unchanged
  • TPC reduction is guaranteed at very short treatment time
  • Suitable for the organic production of spices
  • Only 30% steam and energy consumption compared to conventional technology
  • Small footprint

Mixing of Food Powders

BHS offers you highly developed technology for the production of spice mixtures. The mixing of base products with different properties such as particle size, fragility, or bulk density, requires a gentle, yet effective mixing process. The flexible BHS plants for homogenizing solids or solids with liquids deliver to these requirements. The BHS horizontal mixer AVA HTC ensures homogeneous mixing of even the smallest amounts, which constitutes a key economic criterion when the process involves valuable additives. Depending on the base products used, BHS offers you the mixing technology best suited to producing your product to the highest standards.

Our machines in use

Rotary pressure filter (RPF)

A single rotation of the drum entails a number of different process steps, demonstrating the many facets of filtration.

Vertical dryer (AVA HVW-T)

Short process times with gentle product treatment.

Indexing belt filter (BF)

This type of vacuum filter is particularly gentle on sediments.

Horizontal mixer (AVA HTC/HTK)

Optimal mixing quality with short mixing times.

Success stories

Utilizing egg yolk powder effectively thanks to continuous filtration and drying

April 2019
An internationally operating pharmaceutical company extracts phospholipids from egg yolk and further processes the by-product into an additive for animal feed. Thanks to technological solutions from BHS-Sonthofen and AVA, the company succeeded in optimizing its processes. The solutions consisted of a continuous belt filter from BHS and a horizontal contour dryer from AVA, both of which are ATEX compliant and designed in accordance with GMP. AVA became part of the BHS Group in April 2018 – and the companies’ product portfolios complement each other perfectly.

Retrofitting in amino acid production: BHS supplies rotary pressure filters for the dietary supplement industry

September 2018
L-threonine is an essential amino acid in both the animal and human diet and is produced on an industrial scale across the world. An American manufacturer of dietary supplements was using outdated horizontal automated filter presses to filter L-threonine crystals. BHS-Sonthofen tested its different filter systems for use in this challenging filter application, and, together with the customer, decided on rotary pressure filters as a high-performance alternative that also optimally suits the existing production process.

BHS-Sonthofen supplies hygienic-design indexing belt filter to the food industry

March 2017
A Scandinavian company commissioned BHS-Sonthofen with delivering a filter system for the purpose of manufacturing lactose products. The hygienic-design indexing belt filter is the centerpiece of the installation. This choice enables the operator to phase out several centrifuges, making the new process both simpler and more cost-efficient.
