Solution

Replacing centrifuges with an indexing belt filter

A Scandinavian company commissioned BHS-Sonthofen with delivering a filter system for the purpose of manufacturing lactose products. The hygienic-design indexing belt filter is the centerpiece of the installation. This choice enables the operator to phase out several centrifuges, making the new process both simpler and more cost-efficient.

The new hygienic-design filter system comprises an indexing belt filter of type BF 200 as well as a vacuum and filtrate station. The indexing belt filter is used to manufacture a milk sugar-based medicinal product. The product has a laxative effect on the intestinal microflora and is thus highly suited for treating constipation in infants.

The previous production process had involved multiple centrifuges. In-depth lab trials convinced the customer, however, to replace the centrifuges with a BHS indexing belt filter. Not only does this greatly simplify the process, but it also results in more cost-effective production. As an additional benefit, the system is also easier to clean.

In the initial processing stage, the suspension is filtered. BHS implemented a two-stage cake washing process to ensure that the reusable substances dissolved in this can be extracted as effectively from the solid as possible. As a result, a small amount of cleaning agent suffices to achieve the required product quality. Fully automatic cleaning removes unwanted residual substances from the indexing belt filter with little effort. As the entire filter plant is much simpler in design, it ensures a high operational reliability. At the same time, operating and maintenance costs are significantly lower as compared to centrifuge technology.

BHS supplied the filter plant in February 2017 after having been awarded the contract in late 2016. Commissioning is planned for early May 2017.
