Turning waste into resources

Waste materials are valuable as they contain highly sought-after resources. We specialize in the fields of processing metal-bearing composites, domestic & industrial waste, refuse-derived fuels, gypsum board, disposal and biomass applications. Rotorshredder makes recycling meatballs even more efficient

BHS-Sonthofen has developed a new procedure for processing meatballs in order to increase the amount of copper recovered. Electric motors and motor armatures represent a small fraction of waste from incineration or large shredders, and it is difficult to cleanly separate them by type. Yet they contain a good deal of valuable copper, whose share is up to 22 percent. This impressive new procedure features a Rotorshredder optimized for this process, subsequent materials separation and copper processing using a rotor impact mill.

Biogrinder for biomass treatment plant

The Association for Waste Management Kempten put a biomass treatment plant into operation in 2019. Technology worth about €2.8 million in total ensures that foreign matter is optimally removed from organic waste and green waste to prepare it for fermentation. A BHS-Sonthofen Biogrinder is now used to process and shred this material. Its low power consumption and exceptional shredding results, even for challenging input material, are what make it stand out.

Less wear for economically efficient processing of ASR

Since March 2019, a BHS-Sonthofen rotor impact mill (type RPMX) has been in operation at Jansen Shredder Recycling BV in Moerdijk, the Netherlands, for the fine processing of automotive shredder residues (ASR). Thanks to years of experience in the processing of metal-bearing waste materials, the experts from Sonthofen found the optimal solution for processing abrasive materials. Wear costs at Jansen have significantly decreased since.

Kajaanin Romu Oy operates one of Finland’s most cutting-edge plants for recycling scrap in the town of Kajaani, located approximately 500 km northeast of Helsinki. The company commissioned a BHS-Sonthofen plant for processing automotive shredder residue (ASR) fine fractions of particle sizes between 0 and 30 mm. It separates the feed material abundant with valuable metals into ‘light’ and ‘heavy’ fractions in a single pass. This allows the plant operators to economically produce fractions that can be sold profitably. Moreover, the plant significantly reduces the cost of material disposal at landfills.

DHZ AG – Extracting concentrated metals from incinerator bottom ash

DHZ AG operates a modern recycling center in Lufingen in the Swiss canton of Zurich. The facility focuses on processing incinerator bottom ash (IBA). BHS-Sonthofen supplemented two existing IBA processing plants with an additional plant that extracts high-quality, heavy and light non-ferrous metal fractions from the coarse concentrate generated upstream. These are of such high quality that they can be sold directly to smelters or to industrial customers.

No gold in the landfill!

Approximately 20 grams of gold, 200 to 300 grams of silver, plus platinum and other precious and non-ferrous metals: that's how many valuable materials can be contained in a ton of the heavy non-ferrous fraction of the processed material left over from the recycling of automotive, electrical or electronic scrap. Up to now, the recyclable materials have been landfilled. BHS-Sonthofen processing plants now recover these precious metals using a unique process.

New process from BHS avoids hazards in recycling of lithium-ion batteries

While the relevance of batteries and accumulators as storage media is increasing significantly, their recycling is linked to challenges. BHS-Sonthofen has developed a safe process for the recycling of batteries and accumulators in several research projects. A continuous gas-tight process from the shredder to the dryer, where the electrolytes evaporate, reliably prevents fires and the escape of toxic gases.

Generating fresh value from organic waste

A major investment: BHS-Sonthofen opens a new, modern test center

On 26 July 2019, BHS-Sonthofen unveiled a new and modern test center in Sonthofen, Germany. The investment of €3.8 million underscores the Group’s leading position as a process consultant and solution provider for mechanical process technology with a focus on mixing, crushing, recycling and filtration technologies. BHS will perform production-scale tests at the center on all machines and processes offered by the company.

IFAT 2018 – Recovering more marketable material from waste

19. April 2018
BHS-Sonthofen will present the pre-shredder of type VRS 1215 at IFAT 2018. It is used for the pre-shredding of domestic and commercial waste, white goods, electronic waste and building materials. For the first time, BHS optionally supplies the machine with either a tearing table or a counter-crossbeam. This allows customers to adapt it to a wide range of feed materials and desired granulation of the shredded material – which is a key prerequisite for cleanly separating the material by type. BHS will also be presenting a Rotorshredder of type RS 2018, which the company has developed specifically for shredding electronic waste.

BHS-Sonthofen takes over AVA

04. April 2018
Effective as of 4 April 2018, BHS-Sonthofen acquired all shares in AVA GmbH & Co. KG, which is based in the Bavarian town of Herrsching. As the product portfolios of the two companies complement each other perfectly, this move strengthens BHS-Sonthofen’s market position in the field of mixing technology. It furthermore supplements the company’s competence in the field of solid-liquid separation with AVA’s drying technology. When the owners of AVA wished to retire yet lacked a successor, they decided to sell the family business. The parties agreed to keep the purchase price confidential. The Herrsching site will be retained, together with all AVA employees. Both companies will continue to operate in the marketplace under their own name.

Inaugurating the fourth factory hall in Tianjin, China

On 12 July 2017, a new, fourth factory hall was festively inaugurated at the Chinese site in Tianjin following six months of construction. With a floor space of 2,000 m², the new factory hall will not only primarily serve as a warehouse, but will also increase capacities for all production processes.
