Turning waste into resources

Waste materials are valuable as they contain highly sought-after resources. We specialize in the fields of processing metal-bearing composites, domestic & industrial waste, refuse-derived fuels, gypsum board, disposal and biomass applications. Our solutions shred and crush the feed material to the desired size, and they pelletize or isolate material composites. This provides the ideal basis for subsequent separation and sorting processes.

Lithium-Ion Batteries Safely Recycled Using a New Process

The recycling of lithium-ion batteries increasingly involves major challenges. BHS-Sonthofen has developed a new process through various research projects, which is being used for the first time in Scandinavia: A completely gas-tight process reliably prevents fires and the escape of toxic gases.

Indian company uses BHS Biogrinder to process rice straw

At its biogas plant near Chandigarh in the state of Punjab, the Indian company Source Facility uses a BHS Biogrinder to process paddy straw, coconut shells and other organic waste materials. The Biogrinder works for multiple feed materials and allows for an efficient biogas production process.

BHS-Sonthofen launches a new version of the Biogrinder on the market

BHS-Sonthofen has launched a new, completely redesigned version of the successful Biogrinder on the market. The Biogrinder is used in biomass processing, where it ensures that biogas is generated efficiently and production is accelerated. The machine is now fitted with a disk rotor and stainless-steel components, making it stand out thanks to its improved durability and flexibility.

New process from BHS avoids hazards in recycling of lithium-ion batteries

While the relevance of batteries and accumulators as storage media is increasing significantly, their recycling is linked to challenges. BHS-Sonthofen has developed a safe process for the recycling of batteries and accumulators in several research projects. A continuous gas-tight process from the shredder to the dryer, where the electrolytes evaporate, reliably prevents fires and the escape of toxic gases.

Less wear for economically efficient processing of ASR

A BHS-Sonthofen rotor impact mill (type RPMX) has been in operation at Jansen Shredder Recycling BV in Moerdijk, the Netherlands, for the fine processing of automotive shredder residues (ASR) for almost a year. Thanks to years of experience in the processing of metal-bearing waste materials, the experts from Sonthofen found the optimal machine for processing abrasive materials. Wear costs at Jansen have significantly decreased since.

Generating fresh value from organic waste

The Association for Waste Management Kempten (Zweckverband für Abfallwirtschaft Kempten – ZAK) has been using their new biomass treatment plant since May 2019. Technology worth about €2.8 million in total now ensures that foreign matter is optimally removed from organic waste and green waste before fermentation. The plant-based elements have to be effectively decomposed in order to achieve the best result for the latter. That’s why a BHS-Sonthofen Biogrinder is now used to process and shred this material. Its low power consumption and exceptional shredding results, even for challenging input material, are what make it stand out.

BHS-Sonthofen acquires control technology provider Thoma

07. January 2020
BHS-Sonthofen considerably expanded its portfolio in all things control technology at the turn of the year. Its newly founded subsidiary BHS Control Systems GmbH & Co. KG. acquired Thoma Elektrosteuerungsanlagen GmbH from Babenhausen near Memmingen as part of an asset purchase agreement on 1 January 2020. This will allow BHS-Sonthofen to significantly expand its expertise in the area of control technology. Alongside Thoma’s existing business fields, BHS Control Systems is taking on the tasks of planning and implementing plant control systems for projects undertaken by BHS-Sonthofen and AVA GmbH & Co. KG, the latter of which was acquired in 2018.

A major investment: BHS-Sonthofen opens a new, modern test center

27. July 2019
On 26 July 2019, BHS-Sonthofen unveiled a new and modern test center in Sonthofen, Germany. The investment of €3.8 million underscores the Group’s leading position as a process consultant and solution provider for mechanical process technology with a focus on mixing, crushing, recycling and filtration technologies. BHS will perform production-scale tests at the center on all machines and processes offered by the company.

Rotorshredder makes recycling meatballs efficient

24. June 2019
BHS-Sonthofen has developed a new procedure for processing meatballs in order to increase the amount of copper recovered. Electric motors and motor armatures represent a small fraction of waste from incineration or large shredders, and it is difficult to cleanly separate them by type. Yet they contain a good deal of valuable copper, whose share is up to 22 percent. This impressive new procedure features a Rotorshredder optimized for this process, subsequent materials separation and copper processing using a rotor impact mill.
