After incineration, the incombustible components and the inert materials which are no longer reactive remain behind as ash. Metals, alternative building materials and minerals for building materials can be extracted from this ash. Separating out the metals is particularly important here, as they represent a valuable resource. In addition, the mineral content of the ash may not contain any heavy metals if it is to be used as an alternative building material.

BHS offers innovative mixing and shredding technologies for the handling of raw ash and the fine processing of recyclable materials. They are available as both stand-alone solutions and as turnkey systems. Ash from waste incineration plants is becoming an increasingly valuable resource. Demand for metals is growing worldwide, while at the same time regulations on waste disposal are becoming stricter and landfill costs are rising. In addition, the minerals primarily contained in the ash are used in road construction across most of Europe. In this way, recycling boosts the supply of raw materials while also resulting in lower costs and less use of landfill space.

Each batch of incinerator bottom ash (IBA) is made up of a unique combination of materials. A number of different machines from BHS are used to finely process the ash. The maximum particle size, the desired target size and the required throughput rate all factor in when selecting and configuring the machines. After the material has been processed, it can be separated and refined according to the customer’s requirements.

You can rely on our extensive experience and process know-how. Working together with our customers, we carry out extensive testing on the input material at our modern test center in order to develop a process and system design that best meet their needs. The systems feature a modular design, providing flexibility for modifications and upgrades. Parts of the process can be carried out separately as a standalone solution.

BHS offers tailor-made mixing modules for the stabilization of ash. What sets the BHS single-shaft continuous mixer (MFKG) apart here is the self-cleaning rubber trough, which prevents material build-up on the inner trough wall. This allows you to reduce downtime and achieve maximum efficiency.

British recycling specialists Recycling Lives commissioned a recycling plant that was planned and implemented by BHS-Sonthofen. The plant is designed to handle a variety of materials such as automotive shredder residue (ASR), electric and electronic scrap (WEEE), as well as so-called "meatballs" (electric motors and motor armatures). The process developed together with the company is based on a profitablity analysis and ensures marketable end products.
