Substrate processing

Optimizing methane yields

Breaking up organic material

Organic/animal waste and many other substrates first need to be optimally processed before they are ready for use in biogas production. The intensive mechanical pre-processing results in faster gas yields by increasing the substrate surface while also acting to stabilize the fermentation process.

Our Biogrinder (type RBG) delivers a homogeneously shredded, flaky and well-defibrated substrate with a large particle surface. This significantly accelerates gas production by micro-organisms in the fermenter. Even feed materials that are considered difficult or impossible to recycle can be processed, providing access to low-priced raw materials. Other advantages include reduced agitator use and a reduction of floating layers. The grinder is built for continuous operation, features a rugged design and is easy to operate and maintain.

Benefits at a glance:

  • Optimum crushing, shredding and homogenization of input material
  • Increased methane yield
  • Shorter agitator times and lower power consumption
  •  No deposits build up in the fermenter
  • Greater variety of raw materials
  • Low maintenance requirements
  • Sturdy
  • Continuous operation

Wide array of substrates and raw materials

Wide array of substrates and raw materials

The substrates used as raw material for biogas production vary widely by country and based on the type of agriculture practiced there. Even non-typical raw materials such as water hyacinths, empty fruit bunches (EFB), rice straw and whole tropical fruits can be used in a biogas plant if they are processed correctly. Our Biogrinder (RBG) is able to shred Philippine pineapple as well as it can domestic bioenergy plants.

It can also be used with a wide range of other materials. This includes domestic organic waste, animal waste (from cows, horses, poultry, etc.), food waste, packaged food, waste from restaurants/meat processing plants and renewable raw materials such as corn silage, whole-crop silage, grass clippings, sugar beets and fruit.

Application-specific configuration of solution

There are a wide range of substrates used in biogas production. They vary greatly in terms of structure and composition. Packaged food requires different machine features and setups than bioenergy crops. That’s why each Biogrinder is adapted to the specific application at hand: The degree of shredding and the intensity of the processing can be configured by adjusting the rotor speed and changing the number of hammers installed. Our team of specialists carry out extensive pre-testing on the relevant substrate at our test center.

BHS Biogrinder crushes and mashes organic domestic waste

The BHS Biogrinder (type RBG) is used in the processing of biomass for biogas generation. The BHS Biogrinder is in use in southern Germany to crush and mash organic domestic waste. The upstream substrate processing speeds up gas production in the fermenter. Overall, the biogas plant operates more efficiently and reliably.

Success stories

Biogrinder for biomass treatment plant

The Association for Waste Management Kempten put a biomass treatment plant into operation in 2019. Technology worth about €2.8 million in total ensures that foreign matter is optimally removed from organic waste and green waste to prepare it for fermentation. A BHS-Sonthofen Biogrinder is now used to process and shred this material. Its low power consumption and exceptional shredding results, even for challenging input material, are what make it stand out.
